Liminal Space: Chris Wicker, Channel Scan, installation shot, Blind Alley Projects, May 9—May 20, 2021

Channel Scan is an exhibition that transforms Blind Alley into a multi-level video installation. Working in a digital space, Wicker has stacked multiple 3D models of Blind Alley on top of one another while including stairs descending into each level. Through plastering videos sourced from 2000-2006 on almost every wall, Chris continues his look at hypnotic imagery with the support of appropriated media. Media chosen for this project includes commercials from TV channels such as Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, and ABC Family. This time period, and the media from it, is important to Wicker’s practice due to the fact that it was formative in his personal viewing history and lasting relationship with the screen. He has translated his looping visuals into the gallery space by creating a disorienting digital realm.

Chris Wicker is a video and sound artist from Texarkana, Texas. He received his BFA in Studio Art from Stephen F. Austin State University in 2018 and his MFA in Studio Art from Texas Christian University in 2021. Wicker’s work focuses on hypnotic imagery through nostalgic media. Through intense manipulation placed on source imagery, he uses appropriated media to place the viewer in a trance.
